20 Things to Trash When Moving (or Just Clearing the Clutter)

Laundry basket filled with a gray blanket and beige towel, next to a brown box and a pink-and-black bag in a cluttered setting.

Let’s be real—moving is already a lot. One of our clients put it best: "This process has been the ultimate reality check!" The last thing you need is to waste time, energy, and money packing items you don't even use. And yet, so many people do just that—only to regret it when they’re unpacking boxes full of random junk in their new home.

The dilemma: As you’re packing, you’ll come across things you haven’t touched in years, and let’s be honest—some of it has to go.

As a professional organizer and move manager with over 10 years of experience, I’ve helped countless clients navigate the decluttering process before big moves and life transitions. From downsizing to fresh starts, I’ve seen it all. My expertise is especially sought after by relocation partners because I specialize in discarding and donating efficiently, particularly for households transitioning into smaller spaces. The goal is simple: take only what truly belongs in your next chapter.

If you want a smoother, more organized move, it’s time to embrace a declutter-first mindset before the packing begins. Here’s a bold, no-nonsense list of 20 things you should trash (or responsibly discard) before moving day.

1. Outdated Pantry Essentials

That half-full package of flour from five years ago? Toss it. Spices lose their flavor, and canned goods eventually expire.

2. Stained, Mismatched Tupperware

Lids without containers, containers without lids—why are we holding onto these? Time to let them go. Say goodbye.

3. Dated Receipts & Paper Clutter

Unless it's a tax receipt, you don't require that crumpled receipt you got in 2017. Shred and recycle.

4. Faded Towels & Bedding

If your towels are more "exfoliating" than absorbent, it's time for an upgrade.

5. Clothes That Don't Fit

Stop holding onto that "just in case" stuff—donate what you no longer fit into. Love your current body.

Pro Tip ♻️: Before moving, consider thrifting, upcycling or recycling items you no longer need. Many programs offer cash or  reward incentives for responsible disposal. Our favorites are: Thread Up, SUBSET, and Trashie.

6. Single Socks & Holey Undergarments

No sock cemetery is needed. Ditch them.

7. Expired Medications & Toiletries

Get rid of expired meds responsibly. That 2019 sunscreen? It’s not doing its job anymore. Sorry, not sorry.

Pro Tip👉 : Not sure how to dispose of expired meds safely? Check out the FDA’s medication disposal guidelines.

8. Mystery Cords & Old Tech

If you have no clue what it's supposed to plug into, you don't need it. PLEASE recycle responsibly.

Pro Tip👉: For responsible e-waste recycling, find a certified drop-off site near you via Earth911. If you're a local resident of the City of Pittsburgh you can take advantage of the Electronic Waste Program a partnership with PRC, conveniently located in the Strip District.

9. Freebie Swag & Promotional Junk

If you're never going to be spotted in public wearing that five-year-old conference T-shirt. Toss it.

Fun Fact🤔: The average American home contains over 300,000 items—no wonder moving feels overwhelming!

10. Magazines & Old Books

If it’s collecting dust, donate or recycle it.

11. Broken or Unused Kitchen Gadgets

If you haven't opened that avocado slicer since last year, you never will.

12. Duplicate Items

Do you really need three corkscrews? Keep the best, discard the rest.

13. Toys Your Kids Outgrew

If they haven't touched it in months, another child may be able to utilize it. Of course, they'll ask about it after you donate it. LOL! Explain, how donating helps other children in need.

14. Holiday Decor You Never Use

That busted wreath is not resurging again.

15. Miscellaneous Décor You Don't Adore

If you don't adore it in your new home, don't take it. If it's a family heirloom, post it in the group chat.

16. Excess DIY Materials

Half-full paint cans and dried glue sticks? Get rid of them responsibly.

17. Unused Gym Equipment

If it's been sitting in the corner, it's not coming with you. Try listing it on Facebook Market Place.

18. Aging Pet Supplies

Chewed-up toys and stale treats? SPOT thinks he deserves better.

19. Outdated Throw Pillows & Linens

If they're sagging, stained, or just outdated, leave them behind with your old life.

20. Anything You Haven't Used in a Year

If you have not used it in the last 12 months, the likelihood is that you won't ever.

Pro Tip 📦: Hire a professional organizer that is niched in Move Management before your next move. Decluttering and organizing your stuff= less to pack, which will definitely cut down on your overall cost. Plus, you'll save time and reduce stress.

The Bottom Line? If it doesn't serve a purpose or bring you joy, it doesn't find a place in your moving boxes. Feeling motivated but, need more? For a deeper dive into decluttering before your move, grab this FREE resource Intentional Roadmap to Decluttering Your Home.
